TENDONITIS

TENDONITIS

Tendonitis is an inflammatory process in tendons/ligaments of the foot or ankle that causes continued pain and inability to complete daily activities. It can be caused by a traumatic injury such as a car accident or fall or can be simply caused by overusing a tendon or ligament in the foot and ankle.

The foot and ankle have many tendons and ligaments that allow the foot to function on a daily basis and help us to complete exercise regimens, do our daily jobs, and simply walk from one location to another. Thus, an injury to these tendon or ligaments can truly affect a person’s daily activities and function. Therefore, it is important to address a painful issue when it occurs.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms of this condition include pain to the foot or ankle with and without shoe gear, inability to walk without discomfort, inability to complete daily exercises or daily activities, and swelling of the foot & ankle. If you are experiencing any of these conditions, a foot and ankle specialist can help treat these conditions using a variety of treatments.

If a patient is experiencing any of these symptoms in addition to a thorough physical exam, it is important to make sure that no other conditions are also involved. Therefore, X-rays, MRIs, and CTs may be necessary to diagnose the cause of a patient’s pain.

Treatment options for this condition include icing and elevation of the foot or ankle, keeping the foot and ankle elevated and limiting walking on the foot, using cam walker boots/braces, the use of orthotics, and surgery if needed. At Southwest Austin Foot & Ankle Clinic we pride ourselves at considering conservative treatments prior to consideration of surgical treatments.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms please contact Southwest Austin Foot and Ankle Clinic to make an appointment with one of our physicians.
